                              Photo-collages by Jake Fernandez

Picture
Jake Fernandez' collages are composed of deconstructed and then reassembled photographs from various locations. This transforms a single image into an expanded and multidimensional interpretation of places both real and invented. The resulting pieces are not preconceived but composed by building an image a bit at a time. Each new fragment has a relationship to those already in place and suggests those yet to be added.
An ongoing project , titled The Perpetual Frieze, has been evolving over thirty years and continues on. This series consists of urban landscape elements where the artist has lived and visited, and these locations have been used also in numerous paintings and drawings. In The Perpetual Frieze  collages, he works from left to right, from location to location, with new additions always in progress.
